BORN RIPLINGHAM, YORKS, 1888. SECOND SON OF GEORGE & ROSE GILBY, OF 14, CLAREMONT AVENEUE, NICHOLSON STREET, HULL AND 32, RODNEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). A FORMER CLERK.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS SERGEANT, 201754, WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 01/10/1917, AGED 29.

HE WAS A SINGLE MAN. HIS ARMY PENSION WAS AWARDED TO HIS MOTHER ROSE. THE FAMILY MOVED TO NORTH ELLA, WILLERBY, AFTER THE WAR.

HE IS BURIED AT WANCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “SUNSET AND EVENING STAR AND IN THE MORNING LIGHT”

HIS FAMILY CONTINUED TO RAISE MEMROMIAM MESSAGES TO HIM IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL. “DEATH DIVIDES US, BUT MEMORY CLINGS”. (HDM 01/10/1918).
