Giles, John Arthur (Johnny)

BORN HULL 1882. KNOWN AS ‘JOHNNY’. SON OF THE LATE ARTHUR CHARLES (1852-1915) & ANNIE GILES (1865-1950), AT 20 SUBWAY STREET AND 7, TOWLERS TERRACE, ETON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS.

HIS WIFE GERTRUDE PAMELA GILES AT 11, GRASSMERE AVENUE, SUBWAY STREET, HULL. BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS A DOCK LABOURER AT THE RED CROSS STEAM FISHING CO., ST ANDREWS DOCK. HE WAS GREATLY RESPECTED BY ALL THAT KNEW HIM.

HE SERVED IN THE 18TH DURHAM  LIGHT INFANTRY. DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED ON THE 9TH MARCH, 1917, AGED 36.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 20TH MARCH 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS BROTHER, SAPPER, CHARLES WILLIAM GILES, ROYAL ENGINEERS, DIED SEPTEMBER 1923, AGED 24.
