BORN HULL 1886. ELDEST SON OF GEORGE GODFREY (1852-1934) & ELIZABETH GODFREY (1858-1937), OF 16 HORACE AVENUE, CAVE STREET, HULL. ONE OF TWELVE CHILDREN. (FIVE BROTHERS AND SIX SISTERS). SON OF A BUILDER’S CARTER. HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER AND WAS EMPLOYED AY HOLMES TANNERY, SOUTHCOATES, HULL. HE WAS MARRIED AND HIS WIFE LIVED AT 9 LIGNEY TERRACE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL
HE ENLISTED IN HULL DURING FEBRUARY 1917. SERVED IN THE 1ST LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 23594, TO THE LABOUR CORPS. HE DIED ON 11/01/1919, AGED 33. HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM AT IRCHONWELZ COMMUNAL CEMETERY, HAINAUT, BELGIUM.
THREE OF HIS BROTHERS SERVED IN THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, CHARLES GODFREY, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON 29/06/1916.
