BORN HULL 03/03/1894. SCULCOATES. SON OF JAMES ALFRED & SARAH ANN GODFREY ,AT 44 , OXFORD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHERS, ALFRED, JAMES AND THOMAS AND OLDER SISTER LILLY GODFREY. EMPLOYED AS A BELL SPLICER IN AN IRON FOUNDRY BEFORE THE WAR.
HE ENLISTED IN YORK, ON 17/08/1914. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, IN THE 1ST ROYAL MARINE LIGHT INFANTRY, ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION. POSTED TO THE MIDDLE EAST FROM 28/02/1915. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR BRAVERY, NORTH OF ANCRE, ON 13/11/1916, (LONDON GAZETTE – 19/02/1917). KILLED AT ‘BOOM BOOM RAVINE’ ON 17/02/1917, AGED 22. HE IS BURIED AT QUEENS CEMETERY, BUCQUOY, FRANCE.
