Henry Snr worked for a Timber Merchants in the city. Henry Jnr was killed in action during the fighting for Oppy Wood on 3rd May 1917, aged just 19. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. His father died less than a year later, leaving Lydia to raise her remaining seven children alone. The youngest at that point was 2. With no Welfare State it is virtually impossible to imagine how that could be done, but she managed.
