BORN BEVERLEY 1899. SON OF JOSEPH GORBERT (1868-1918) & ELIZABETH HUNT (1872-1937). SON OF A DOCKSIDE LABOURER. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND TWO SISTERS WHO ALL LIVED AT 22, ESCOURT STREET, NEWBRIDGE ROAD, HULL. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS AN APPRENTICE RIVETTER OR “HOLDER UP” IN THE SHIPYARD. DECRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 34.5-36 INCH CHEST SIZE, 117 LBS WEIGHT.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 17/04/1917. TRAINED AT RUGELEY AND ASHFORD CAMPS. SENT TO FRANCE 21/01/1918. SERVED WITH THE 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ADMIITD TO HOSPITAL WITH FROSTBITE TO HIS LEFT FOOT, ON 23/03/1918. RE-JOINED THE BATTALION, ON 08/05/1918. REPORTED MISSING AND THEN KILLED IN ACTION, ON 29/05/1918, AGED 19. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 43 DAYS.
