BORN HULL 1885. SON OF MICHAEL & ANNIE GORDON, OF 13 MARKET PLACE, HULL AND 22, AUCKLAND AVENUE, HULL (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS). SON OF A TOBACONIST FROM RUSSIA. ELDEST OF THREE SONS. HIS BROTHERS WERE PERCIVAL & HENRY. EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. HE WORKED WITH HIS FATHER AS A TOBACONIST.

HE ENLISTED IN EDINBURGH. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, WITH THE 1ST GORDON HIGHLANDERS. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT THE SOMME, ON 26/07/1916, AGED 30.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL.

HE IS BURIED AT ABBEVILLE, HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “REQUIESCAT IN PACE”

HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE WESTERN SYNAGOGUE, LINNAEUS STREET, HULL/ HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (Names)/ NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANYMORE.
