BORN HULL 1883. SON OF EDWARD & ESTER GOSSCHALK OF 210 ANLABY ROAD, HULL, HULL. ONE OF SIX SONS AND THREE TO HOLD A COMMISSION. EDWARD GOSSCHALK WAS EDUCATED AT HYMERS COLLEGE, HULL, WHERE HE EXCELLED IN ATHLETICS. HIS FATHER WAS A FORMER SHERIFF OF HULL CORPORATION. A WOOL MERCHANT AND FREEMASON OF THE UNITED GRAND LODGE OF ENGLAND. ALSO A PARTNER OF THE FIRM DUMOULIN AND GOSSCHALKS, MERCHANTS AND IMPORTERS. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 24/04/1915. WOUNDED IN 1916 AND RETURNED HOME. COMMISSIONED AS LIEUTENANT, IN THE 6TH KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. KILLED AT DEVILLE WOOD, ON THE SOMME, ON 28/08/1916, AGED 32. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND MEDALS WERE LEFT TO HIS PARENTS, WHO MOVED THE ‘EDGEBASTON’ NEWLAND PARK, HULL. HE LEFT £2432 IN HIS WILL TO HIS ELDEST BROTHER, MAURICE VICTOR GOSSCHALK, A SOLICITOR.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE WAR MEMORIAL HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE WESTERN SYNAGOGUE, LINNAEUS STREET, HULL/ HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (Names)/ NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANYMORE.

HE LEFT BROTHERS, HERMAN, ALFRED, JAMES, EDWARD AND FRED. ONE OF HIS BROTHER WAS A MAJOR AND ACTIVE IN RECRUITMENT IN BRIDLINGTON, ANOTHER BROTHER WAS A CAPTAIN AND INVALIDED HOME WITH SHELL SHOCK, WORKED IN TERRITORIAL RECRUITMENT AT HULL PARAGON STATION. A THIRD BROTHER, ESTABLISHED A LEGAL FIRM WHICH REMAINS IN HULL  TODAY.
