BORN HULL 22/11/1890. STEPHEN GREEN (1858-1901) & HANNAH JACK (1860-1945), OF 16 SEFTON STREET, HULL. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. WORKED AS A FISH MERCHANT, IN HULL & GRIMSBY. HE WAS EMPLOYED BY MESSRS, DISHMAN & DAGMAN, OF HULL & BILLINGSGATE.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 08/11/1915. VERY SHORT SIGHTED, HE WORE SPECTACLES. DECLARED NOT FIT FOR THE INFANTRY. HE WAS TRAINED AT ALDERSHOT, HAMPSHIRE. POSTED TO THE ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS. POSTED TO THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 21/01/1916, ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED IN THE SUEZ CANAL, ON 03/08/1916, AGED 25. IT WAS BELIEVED HE STUMBLED OFF THE JETTY IN THE DARK WHILE BATHING OFF DUTY.
HE WAS UNMARRIED. HI ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO DORIS M. BLASKER.
HE LEFT A BROTHERS JOHN (RNR), STEPHEN (RNR) ALFRED (1895-1916) & JAMES (1900-1987), SISTERS, PHOEBE AND HANNAH.
BURIED AT PORT SAID WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THY WILL BE DONE.”
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 16/08/1916. *
HIS BROTHER, JOHN GREEN SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY RESERVE. ANOTHER, STEPHEN GREEN, WAS AN ENGINEER ON MINESWEEPERS AND ANOTHER BROTHER, ALFRED GREEN, DIED IN HULL IN 1916, AGED 21.
