BORN HULL 1883. SON OF EDWARD MAWER GREEN (1852-1934) & MARTHA REBECCA GREEN ( 1857-1933), OF 187, ELLA STREET, HULL. SON OF A POSTAL INSPECTOR. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS, EDWARD AND CHARLIE AND THREE YOUNGER SISTERS, CISSIE, CLARA AND ANNIE.
A FORMER POSTAL CLERK LIKE HIS BROTHER EDWARD. HE MARRIED ELIZA MOSES (1886-1971) AT HARLEY STREET REGISTRY OFFICE ON 01/08/1906. HIS WIFE ELIZA GREEN AND SIX CHILDREN, LIVED AT 64, PERTH STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & ARMY ADDRESS). HIS CHILDREN WERE LEONARD MOSES, THOMAS EDWIN, HENRY, MURIEL, VERA AND MABEL.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, 0N 24/06/1916. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE ON 03/10/1916, AGED 32 AND 5 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 CHEST SIZE, 126 LBS WEIGHT, AND “GOOD” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 31/03/1917. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 6933, 8TH LONDON REGIMENT.
TRANSFERRED AS A SIGNALLER, TO THE 152ND MACHINE GUN CORPS, ON 05/12/1916. HE WAS KILLED YPRES, ON 09/07/1917, AGED 34. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR ONE YEAR AD 16 DAYS.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW. SHE RECEIVED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 33 SHILLINGS AND NINE PENCE FOR HER SIX CHILDREN, FROM 04/02/1918. HE IS BURIED AT BRANDHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS “BELOVED HUSBAND OF ELIZA GREEN, HULL”
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MARY’S CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, LOWGATE, HULL.
HE LEFT £296 IN HIS WILL TO HIS HIS WIFE, ELIZA AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS.
HIS ELDER BROTHER, PRIVATE, EDWARD GREEN, 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED BY A SHELL EXPLOSION, ON 13/03/1916, AGED 34. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, GUNNER, CHARLES ARTHUR GREEN SERVED WITH THE MACHINE GUN CORPS AND WAS DISCHARGED WITH MALARIA WHEN THE WAR ENDED.
