BORN GRIMSBY 1898. SON OF FRANK SAUNDERS & EDITH GREENLEES, OF THE THREE CROWNS LODGING HOUSE, CHURCH STREET, HULL. HE ALSO LIVED AT 24 CROWLE STREET, HEDON ROAD, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS, 07/10/1915).
HE ENLISTED IN ABERDEEN, AT THE AGE OF 17. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 03/02/1915. SERVED WITH THE 1ST GORDON HIGHLANDERS. ALFRED HAD BEEN WOUNDED IN THE HEAD BY SHRAPNEL AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS AND HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH OCTOBER 1915. * HE WAS INVALIDED TO LEICESTER HOSPITAL FOR RECOVERY BEFORE RETURNING TO THE FRONT.
HE LATER WON THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR GALLANTRY AT ARRAS. (HDM 21/07/1917). HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT MESSINE RIDGE, ON 17/06/1917, AGED 18.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, TO THE MISSING IN FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, EDITH AT 12, BARNSLEY TERRACE, WOODHOUSE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
