BORN HULL 1891. A HULL PAL. DECLARED MISSING IN ACTION AT BEAUMONT HAMEL. SON OF CORNELIUS GREENWOOD, 18, ASH GROVE, BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL. HIS MOTHER JESSIE PEARSON DIED IN 1895. HIS STEPMOTHER WAS BETTY ANN GREENWOOD.
HE WORKED AS A BRICKLAYER FOR HIS FATHER WHO WAS A BUILDING CONTRACTOR. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 137 LBS, 36 INCH CHEST.
HE MARRIED AT HULL, ON 14/02/1913. HIS WIFE, GERTRUDE MARY SPENDLOW, LIVED AT 12 LANARK STREET, OFF PERTH STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD TWO YOUNG SONS, CORNELIUS AND DENNIS.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 24/11/1914. HE SERVED IN EGYPT FROM 15/12/1915. ARRIVED FRANCE ON 03/03/1916. WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT EYE ON 19/07/1916. RE-JOINED THE BATTALION ON 14/09/1916. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION. HIS BODY WAS FOUND IN THE GERMAN LINES. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS WIDOW AND GERTRUDE WAS GIVEN A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 22 SHILLINGS AND 11 PENCE FOR HERSELF AND HER TWO SONS. DUE TO SEVERE LOSSES THE 13TH EYR WAS DISBANDED IN FRANCE ON THE 8TH FEBRUARY 1918. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 19TH MARCH 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHNS, NEWLAND, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL
