BORN BARROW ON HUMBER, LINCS, 1883. SON OF THOMAS NELSON GRIMBLEBY (1855-1942) & EMILY DAWSON (1853-1923). SON OF A ROAD LABOURER. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.
BEFORE THE WAR, HE WAS EMPLOYED BY THE LONDON AND MANCHESTER INSURANCE COMPANY FOR TEN YEARS. WORKED AS A BRICKMAKER AND MOTOR DRIVER. LIVING AT 47A WITHAM IN 1915.
HE WAS WELL KNOWN IN EAST HULL CIRCLES, AS AN AMATEUR VIOLIST OF SOME MERIT. HE ALSO WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE EAST HULL CONSERVATIVES.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 20/05/1915. SERVED WITH THE 25TH AMBULANCE CONVOT, ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 26/O8/ 1915. DIED OF GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO LEGS AND BACK, ON 26/03/1918, AGED 35. DIED AT NO: 49 CASUALTY CLEARING STATION. HE WAS UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS FATHER, TOM. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 21/05/1918. *
HIS BROTHER, HARRY NELSON GRIMBLEBY, DIED 02/02/1917, AGED 30. THEY LEFT ANOTHER BROTHER, ARTHUR AND SISTERS, ETHELWYN, AND ELIZA RYAN, ALL LIVING AT 33 PEMBERTON STREET, DANSOM LANE, HULL.
