BORN HULL 1888. ONLY SON OF JOSEPH GRINDELL (1852-1931) & MARIA ELIZABETH HOUGHT (1859-1914), OF 128, COLTMAN STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHER OF MARGARET ANNIE GRINDELL (1885-1966). SON OF A COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER. EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. HE WAS IN BUSINESS WITH HIS UNCLE AT GRINDELL SEED CRUSHING FIRM. WAS ALSO A LIEUTENANT IN THE 2ND HULL VOLUNTEER BATTALION, WHEN WAR BEGAN.
JOINED THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY IN JUNE 1915. PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN IN THE 22ND PIONEER BATTALION. HE WAS 29, WHEN KILLED ON 20/06/1917, DURING AN ENEMY BARRAGE WHICH CAUSED HEAVY CASUALTIES.
HE IS LISTED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 26TH JUNE 1917. *
HE IS BURIED AT DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY EXTENSION. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “UNTIL THE DAY BREAK AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY”
UNMARRIED. HE LEFT £681 IN HIS WILL, TO JOHN WILLIAM COULSON, AN EGG IMPORTER.
