BORN WILNE, DERBY 27/12/1894. SON OF ARTHUR GUNN AND MARY EYRE. SON OF A GARDENER. EMPLOYED AS A LACE HAND. HE ENLISTED IN NOTTINGHAM, ON 05/09/1914. SERVED AS COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR, IN THE 13TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE IN SEPTEMBER 1915. WAS WOUNDED ON THE SOMME IN JULY 1917. ON RECOVERY, THE FOLLOWING JULY, HE RETURNED TO FRANCE AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION AT BERRY-AU-BAC, ON 27/05/1918. CAPTAIN KIRK, OF THE CHAPLAIN SERVICES, WROTE OF HIM, “CHARMING, RELIABEL, AND MANLY IN EVERY WAY, AND HAD THE LOVE AND CONFIDENCE OF EVERYBODY, WHO SERVED WITH OR UNDER HIM.” HE WAS AGED 23. COMMEMORATED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MARY.
HIS FIANCEE, PEARL SHARPE LIVED AT THIS HULL ADDRESS. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 02/07/1918. HE IS ALSO LISTED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4.
