Hadwin, John

BORN ASPATRIA, WHITEHAVEN, CUMBRIA, 1865. A REGULAR SOLDIER AND COLOUR SERGEANT WITH THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.

HE  ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 13/06/1883. SERVED AT GIBRALTA, WEST INDIES, SOUTH AFRICA AND EGYPT. WAS DISCHARGED AFTER NEARLY 23 YEARS SERVICE, ON 31/03/1906 AND THEN WORKED AS A NIGHT WATCHMAN. HE MARRIED MARY HERBERT, AT ST STEPHENS, HULL, ON 14/08/1901. THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN AND LIVED AT 15 , NORTH STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 10 BRIGHT TERRACE, BRIGHT STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS).

HE RE-ENLISTED WHEN WAR BEGAN ON 10/09/1914. DESCRIBED AS 6 FOOT, 1 INCH TALL, 38-41 INCH CHEST, 166 LBS WEIGHT, GREY EYES, GREY HAIR, ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION. BECAME COMPANY QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT,  OF THE 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, NO:11/809. SERVED AT HOME DURING THE WAR. DISCHARGED ON 14/03/1918 WITH LUNG TROUBLE. TRANSFERRED TO LABOUR CORPS DEPOT, BASED IN EVERINGHAM, YORKSHIRE. DIED ON MYALGIA AND LUNG CANCER, ON 28/07/1920, AGED 55. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW MARY, WHO MOVED TO 11, LANGFORD TERRACE, DANSOM LANE, HULL.
