BORN HULL 1888. ONLY SON OF EDWARD & MARY JANE HALES, OF FERRIES STREET, HULL AND LATER AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND. HE ENLISTED IN NEW ZEALAND AND SERVED WITH THE 1ST WELLINGTON BATTALION. HE LANDED ON THE FIRST DAY AT GALLIPOLI AND WAS WOUNDED. HE WAS SENT TO FRANCE WHERE HE WAS WOUNDED AGAIN AND DIED LATER, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 28. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE SOMME ON THEÂ CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL
HE LIVED IN GLEN EDEN, AUCKLAND, NZ. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
