BORN HULL 1888. SON OF THOMAS HALLIGAN (1863-1896) AND JULIA HALLIGAN (1865-1934), OF 15 PORTLAND STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
A HULL CORPORATION LABOURER AND TOWN HALL MESSENGER. HE JOINED THE TERRITORIAL ARMY ON 09/04/1908. IN CIVILIAN LIFE, HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER (1911 CENSUS) AND FOR THE BLUNDELLS FACTORY.
HE MARRIED MARIA ANDREWS, AND LIVED AT 6 ANNIS PLACE, SYKES STREET, HULL, AND 130 ST PAUL STREET, HULL. THEY HAD ONE CHILD.
HE JOINED AS A BUGLER AND DRUMMER IN 1908. SERVED IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 28/06/1915. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 18/04/1916, AGED 29. HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO BOTH HIS MOTHER AND WIFE.
HE DIED IN THE ARMS OF HIS COMRADE, WHO RETURNED HIS BATTERED BUGLE TO HIS FAMILY IN HULL. A SAD FEATURE WAS THAT HE WAS KILLED DAYS BEFORE HE WAS DUE TO RETURN HOME ON LEAVE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 8 YEARS AND 11 DAYS.
HE WAS 29 YEARS OLD AND A MARRIED MAN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 4TH MAY 1916. *
HE WAS RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S SYKES STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 09 October 1916). HIS NAME IS ALSO LISTED ON THE SPENCER STREET MEMORIAL (HDM 01/12/1916).
HE IS BURIED AT LINDENHOEK CHALET MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “ON HIS SOUL SWEET JESUS HAVE MERCY”
