Harrison, Alfred

Pte, Alfred Harrison, 10th EYR

BORN HULL 1892. HUSBAND OF EVA HARRISON, OF 5, ELIZABETH TERRACE, WALCOTT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF THOMAS & PRISCILLA ELIZABETH HARRISON, OF 12, POST OFFICE ENTRY, HIGH STREET, HULL, (1911 CENSUS). HE WAS CALLED UP ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. WENT TO FRANCE WITH COLONEL SHAW IN APRIL 1915 AND WAS WOUNDED FOUR TIMES. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH JULY 1918 *
Alfred was born in 1893, the second of four children to Thomas and Priscilla Harrison of 12 Post Office Entry, High Street, Hull. He worked as a Bottle Washer before the war, at least at the time of the 1911 Census anyway. What I can say for certain is that he lived with his wife Eva at 5 Elizabeth Terrace, Walcott Street, Hessle Road, Hull and that when he enlisted he joined the 10th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in the trenches on the Western Front. Alfred Harrison was killed in action on 28th June 1918, during what became known as the Battle of Lys, when the Pals attacked German positions around an old French farm known as Le Cornet Perdu. There was little enemy resistance that day and most of the casualties were caused by errant shelling from the battalion’s own 18-pounders which were falling short during the bombardment intended to cover their attack, and landing in among the massed ranks of British troops. Alfred was buried at Nieppe-Bois British Cemetery; he was 25 years old.
