BORN BRIDLINGTON 1876. SON OF JOSEPH & REBECCA HARRISON. HUSBAND OF ROSE HARRISON, AND TWO CHILDREN, AT 15 RIPON TERRACE, LIDDELL STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). A MARINER. LOST AT SEA, AGED 40. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET HULL.
S/S ‘RIEVAULX ABBEY’ – Built for Hull & Netherlands S.S.Co Ltd (J. N. H. Ringrose), Catered for 48 first class passengers amidships, 28 secound class passengers in the poop, 44 steerage under deck forword; Hired by the Admiralty as a store carrier between 13 March & 29 May 1915; On the 27 August 1915 taken up as an armaments carrier (Y2.56); Vessel on passage Rotterdam to Hull, with 640 tons of general cargo, when struck a mine laid by UC-10 and sank 3/4 of a mile ENE of Rosse Spit buoy, River Humber; 27 crew, 5 passengers, 2 lives lost. On her home run the RIEVAULX ABBEY struck a mine on 03/09/1916, which exploded beneath the engine room at 3 p.m. causing her to sink within five minutes. The master remained on board until he believed everyone had got into the boats, then jumped into the sea and was picked up. The s.s. QUEENIE soon came to their assistance and collected the passengers and crew, later landing them at Hull. Two crew man were injured at the time and only then it was realised that a fireman and the boatswain were missing, presumed drown when the vessel sank.
