Born Withernwick, 1895 and resident in Witherwick. Son of James Webster Harsley (1863-1930) and Annie Elizabeth Hobson (1855-1929), of Club Row, Withernwick, Hull. One of fours sons. Son of a Bootmaker. he was a bootmaker Apprentice (1911 Census)
Enlisted Beverley, on 03/03/1916. Served as Private 22122, 10th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. Arrived in France on 03/06/1916. Killed in action 30/07/1916. Buried in ST. VAAST POST MILITARY CEMETERY, RICHEBOURG-L’AVOUE, Pas de Calais, France. Plot III. Row D. Grave 16. His army effects were left to his mother, Annie and brothers Walter and Hubert Harsley.
His Brother, Private, Arthur Harsley, 3/6299 [SDGW} or 3/6269 [CWGC], 2nd Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 9 April 1915. Aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21 and 31.
Both brothers are commemorated on the Withernwick WW1 memorial.
