BORN HULL 1888. SON OF THOMAS & MARTHA HARTLEY OF NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. BEFORE THE WAR, HE WORKED FOR LEE SMITH, OILMILLERS.

HE WAS MARRIED TO FLORENCE HARTLEY & HAD FOUR CHILDREN. HIS ARMY ADDRESS WAS 5 WELCH COURT, SCOTT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEIR SON WILLIAM DIED ON 12/12/1916. HIS WIFE DIED ON 22/02/1916. MARTHA LILFORD BECAME GUARDIAN OF THEIR THREE CHILDREN AT 3 NELSON SQUARE, NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION RECORDS)

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 29.

HE IS RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S, NEW GEORGE STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 03 November 1917).

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 27TH OCTOBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*
