SERVED AS A GUNNER, IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 06/10/1917, AGED 27. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ELLEN.
HE IS BURIED AT ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON SUTTON VILLAGE MEMORIAL.
HIS NEPHEWS WHICH OFTEN STAYED AT 25 LEE STREET, WERE ALSO KILLED IN THE WAR. THEY WERE LEONARD HATFIELD, S/S “ADRIATIC”, LOST AT SEA ON 31/10/1916, AGED 17, AND PRIVATE, HENRY HATFIELD, 12TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED ON 26/09/1917, AGED 19
