BORN KNARESBOROUGH, 09/04/1895. SON OF ESTHER ELIZABETH CATCHPOLE (1855-1927) & THE LATE ISAAC HAYWOOD (1853-1915), AT 3 WRAY’S TERRACE, LIVERPOOL STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HIS EXTENDED FAMILY ALL LIVED IN LIVERPOOL STREET. HE WORKED FOR THE HULL CORPORATION SANITARY DEPARTMENT.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 31/08/1914, AGED 19 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS. INITIALLY HE SERVED AS 96238, IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY TERRITORIALS, 48TH BRIGADE. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 142 LBS WEIGHT, 38 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES AND FAIR/BROWN HAIR. HE WAS DISCHARGED AS ‘UNFIT’ ON 19/01/1915, PROBABLY WITH THE EARLY SIGNS OF TB. HE RE-ENLISTED ON 18/12/1915 AND CLASSED AS ‘FIT FOR LABOUR’. HE HAD REDUCED IN WEIGHT. HE SERVED AS PRIVATE, 21595, WITH THE 3RD EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ‘B’ COMPANY. HE DIED OF ‘ACUTE PNEUMONIA’, AT BRADFORD MILITARY HOSPITAL, ON 31/08/1916, AT 11.30AM, AGED 21. HE DIED EXACTLY TWO YEARS ON FROM THE DAY THAT HE ENLISTED. HE WAS BURIED HULL WESTERN CEMETERY, ON MONDAY 04/09/1916, AT 2.30PM. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, ESTHER.
HE LEFT A HALF BROTHER, GEORGE HEPPLEWHITE, A SISTER SUSIE HOWIE, AND A HALF SISTER, ELIZABETH RIMMER, WHO ALL LIVED IN LIVERPOOL STREET, HESSLE ROAD.
