BORN HULL 10/10/1891. SON OF JOHN INKERMAN HEDGES (1860-1931) & KATE WREN (1860-1936), OF 16 GOODRICK TERRACE, CAVE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A GARDENER. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN EDUCATED AT BEVERLEY ROAD COUNCIL SCHOOL. WORKED AS A GARDENER WITH HIS BROTHERS MARK. AND GEORGE. ENLISTED IN 154TH LABOUR CORPS BEFORE JOINING THE CHESHIRE REGIMENT, EX 55475, ON 10/11/1916. ARRIVED FRANCE DECEMBER 1917. KILLED A MONTH LATER ON THE MENIN ROAD ON 31/01/1918, AGED 26. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS FATHER JOHN. BURIED IN DICKESBUSH CEMETERY. HE IS LISTED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4.

HIS BROTHER NOEL DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED ON THE SOMME ON 08/07/1916. ANOTHER BROTHER MARK ELLIS HEDGES ALSO FELL. ONE OF THREE SONS LOST THE WAR. ANOTHER BROTHER GEORGE, DIED IN HULL IN JULY 1915, AGED 26. HE LEFT SISTERS, KATE, ALICE AND ESTHER AND A SURVIVING BROTHER, HERBERT, WHO ENLISTED ON 18/09/1917 AND SERVED AS A CLERK, IN THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT DEPOT, YORK.
TWO OTHER BROTHERS, JOHN WREN HEDGES, DIED IN 1906, AGED 11 AND ERIC FOSTER HEDGES DIED IN 1909, AGED 11, AND SISTER EDITH ISABELLA HEDGES DIED IN 1902, AGED 5.
