Hellyer, George Peabody

BORN HULL 24/11/1889. ONLY SON OF JOHN WILLIAM & SALLY MAY HELLYER, KIRK ELLA, HULL. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO ENLIST AND SERVED WITH THE 5TH LIVERPOOL REGIMENT (TERRITORIALS). HE DIED OF WOUNDS IN A BOULOGNE HOSPITAL, ON 21/05/1915, AGED 26. GEORGE WAS THE NEPHEW OF CHARLES HELLYER, THE HULL TRAWLER OWNER AND COUSIN TO LIEUT, SIDNEY H. HELLYER, WHO WAS KILLED AT THE FRONT IN 1915. HIS DEATH & PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 24TH MAY 1915, AND THE HULL TIMES ON 29TH MAY 1915.* HIS UNCLES ORLANDO & OWEN HELLYER BEGAN THE CITY OF HULL GREAT WAR TRUST, BY DONATING £5,000, PROFITS FROM THEIR MUNITIONS BUSINESS. Corporal George Peabody Hellyer served in the 1/5th Kings Liverpool Regiment. George was born in the Anlaby Road (Newington) area of Hull in 1889 and in 1901 lived at 639 Anlaby Road with his Father John William and his Mother Sally May. In 1911 he lodged at 53 Chester Road, Watford and was an Ironmongers Assitant at the time. When George signed up with the Army in Liverpool (4th August 1914) he was working still as an Ironmongers Assistant at 9 Princes Terrace which was possibly in Watford. George is mentioned on the Kirk Ella and Willerby War Memorial due to his family living at Vesper Lodge, Kirk Ella at the time of his death. Georges fate in World War One was as following: On the 16th May 1915 he was wounded in Richebourg L’Avoue which was the Battle of Festubert.
On the same day he was transferred to a hospital in Lille with a Gun Shot Wound to the Right Leg. On the 17th May 1915 he was admitted to the No 13 Stationary Hospital in Boulogne. On the 21st May 1915 at 4pm he died in hospital.
