BORN BEVERLEY 1889. SON OF WILLIAM HELM AND STEP SON OF JANE LEADBETTER. THE FIFTH SON OF NINE CHILDREN. HIS MOTHER, HANNAH BERISFORD, DIED A YEAR AFTER HE WAS BORN. HE WAS A TANNERY LABOURER AND BOARDING AT THIS ADDRESS (1911 CENSUS). ENLISTED YORK. SERVED WITH THE 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMEN. KILLED IN ACTION 1ST JULY 1916. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER WILLIAM. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WW1 MEMORIAL AND THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
The 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment were involved in the Great Push on the Somme on 1st July 1916 and advanced from just North of the Albert Road at La-Boisselle to attack the German positions to the West of Ovilliers La-Boisselle on this morning and suffered heavy casualties
