Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE LEONARD HEMINGWAY 22437. Born in Batley Carr in 1895, Leonard was the eldest of two children and only son of John and Emma Hemingway of 102 New Bridge Road, Hull & 12, Nicholson Street, Hull (War Pension Address). A Tailor’s Cutter by trade, he enlisted at City Hall on 12th December 1915, just as the Pals shipped to Egypt. He trained in the UK until 10th June 1916 when he shipped to France joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in the trenches on the 27th. He lasted three weeks. On 18th July he was wounded by a grenade and rushed to 7th General Hospital St. Omer with multiple shrapnel wounds to both arms, both legs and to his face. He was a fighter though, hanging on in horrific circumstances in unimaginable pain until he died at 3am on 1st August. He is buried in Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery; he was 21 years old.
His name is recorded as killed on the Mersey Street Roll of Honour (Hull Daily Mail 30 December 1916).
