BORN HULL 1890. FRANCIS EDGAR BERTIE HERMANN. SON OF NIELS CHRISTIAN HERMMAN (1859-1926) AND ALICE HERMANN (1856-1943), AT 165, WESTBOURNE STREET, HULL. SON OF A COMPANY SECRETARY, FROM DENMARK. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. EDUCATED AT HULL HYMERS COLLEGE. HE WORKED AT A MAIZE MILL, AS A MILLER’S CLERK. HE WAS 5 FOOT, 9 INCHES TALL, 172 LBS WEIGHT, 38-40.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR.
HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN OCTOBER 1915. HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH MARY (GALE), LIVED AT 77, WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 5, ELDON GROVE, BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL.
HE ENLISTED WITH HIS BROTHER CARL, ON THE 11/09/1914. SERVED IN THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. PROMOTED SERGEANT, “C” COMPANY, WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WOUNDED AND AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR BRAVERY, ON 19/09/1916. WOUNDED AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, AT ETAPLES BASE HOSPITAL, ON 17/11/1916, AGED 26. (Anecdotally, the wound did not seem serious, and brother Carl saw him off on his way to base hospital with “you’re free now, you won’t have to come back”)

HE IS BURIED AT COUIN BRITISH CEMETERY, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE THAN LOSETH HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT. MATT. 10.39”
