Higgins, Walter Douglas Henry

BORN HULL 1896. FOURTH SON OF ALBERT HIGGINS (1858-1913) & FRANCES ELIZABETH TESSEYMAN (1859-1932), OF 21, FREEHOLD STREET, SPRING BANK, HULL AND 9, KIMBERLEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A HULL BUILDER. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS. WORKED AS A SALINATOR CLERK. AND AS A BOOKKEEPER FOR MR F. COSTELLO, SAVILLE STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED HULL. JOINING THE 5TH EAST YORKSHIRE CYCLISTS. TRANSFERRED TO 4TH EYR BATTALION. PROMOTED TO CORPORAL. HE WAS KIILED BY A SHELL, CARRYING WATER AND AMMUNITION TO THE FIRING LINE, ON 25/09/1916, AGED 20.

HIS NAME IS LISTED AS KILLED ON THE CLIFTON STREET SCHOOL MEMORIAL. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER, FRANCES ELIZABETH HIGGINS.

COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 02/11/1916. *

HIS BROTHER , SERGEANT, ALBERT CECIL.HIIGINS, OF THE MACHINE GUN SECTION WAS WOUNDED IN THE WAR. ANOTHER BROTHER, ARTHUR BERNARD HIGGINS, SERVED WITH THE GRENADIER GUARDS AND LIVED AT 9 KIMBERLEY STREET, ARGYL STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). HIS COUSIN, FRANK TESSEYMAN BOUSFIELD, 15187, 2ND CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 22/11/1918, AGED 34.
