HE WORKED AS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT (1911 CENSUS). HE LATER WORKED AT ROSE, DOWN & THOMPSON LTD AS A MUNITIONS WORKER (SHELL FORGER). DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8.5 INCHES TALL, 37-39 INCH CHEST, WESLEYAN RELIGION.
HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 11/12/1915. MOBILISED ON 11/12/1916. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 26710 EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. EMBARKED 07/02/1918. SERVED IN THE 22ND DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY, A PIONEER’S BATTALION. HE DIED ON 10/09/1918, AGED 23. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER, MARGARET AT 24, EDGECUMBE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT HULL METHODIST CHURCH, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL AND AT ST JOHNS CHURCH, NEWLANDS
HE IS BURIED AT GLAGEON COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT”.
