Hill, John William

Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL JOHN WILLIAM HILL 14158. Born in May 1889, John was the youngest of three children to Samuel and Harriet Hill of 21, Grange Street, Hull. A gas stoker for the British Gas Light Company, Hull. He married Eliza Hogarth, at St. Paul’s, Hull on 6th July 1911 and the couple moved to 10, Scarborough Avenue, Bridlington Street in the city. They had two sons, Samuel and Ernest. John William Hill enlisted late in 1915 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He was killed in action on 12th June 1916 and buried in a plot six miles north of Albert which eventually became Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 27 years old.

His name is listed on the Bridlington Street Roll of Honour, (Hull Daily Mail 29 December 1916).

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
