BORN LEEDS 1889. YOUNGEST SON OF WILLIAM HENRY & EMILY HIRTS OF 5 WILTON AVENUE, HOLLAND STREET, HULL. “A CLEVER AND EFFICIENT NAVAL OFFICER “. AN APPRENTICE WITH PRIESTMAN BROTHERS. HE SERVED SEVEN YEARS WITH THE ORIENT LINE. LOST WHEN HIS MERCHANT SHIP WAS SUNK BY SUBMARINE, ON 14/03/1917.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL MEMORIAL. HIS SISTER, MRS CAVE, LIVED AT 8 BEECH AVENUE, GARDEN VILLAGE. ANOTHER SISTER, MRS TAYLOR, LIVED AT 163 BLENHEIM STREET, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL . HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 31/03/1917. *

World War I: The ocean liner struck a mine placed by SM UC-68 ( Imperial German Navy) and was damaged in the Atlantic Ocean off the Eddystone Lighthouse with the loss of eight lives. She was beached but was later refloated
