BORN HULL 1893. ELDEST SON OF CHARLES (1861-1939) & AUGUSTA HOGGARD (1869-1959), OF 37, BLAYDES STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, CYRIL THEODORE HOGGARD (1900-1941). BEFORE THE WAR, WILFRED WORKED AS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT FOR THE HULL CO-OPERATIVE STORE.
HE ENLISTED AT HULL, IN JANUARY 1915. SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HIS BROTHER CYRIL JOINED THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WILFRED WAS ONE OF THREE MEN KILLED WHEN A SHELL HIT THEIR DUGOUT, ON 19/12/1916. HE WAS AGED 23.
“HE WAS KEEN AND TRUSTWORTHY SOLDIER.” HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 10TH JANUARY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHNS, NEWLAND, HULL.
HE IS BURIED AT QUATRE-VENTS MILITARY CEMETERY, ESTREE-CAUCHY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVE’S SACRIFICE FOR LIBERTY”
