Holland, Alfred

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ALFRED HOLLAND 12/172. Born in 1894, Alfred was the eldest of six children to Arthur an Martha Holland of 14 Bedford Street, Hull (war Pension address). A Warehouseman by trade, he enlisted at City Hall on 14th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. Alfred was listed as ‘missing believed killed’ on 27th June 1916. Four days later the Somme attack began and as corpse fell on top of corpse and shells pounded the earth in their tens of thousands daily, Alfred was simply blasted out of existence. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, to those who died in that sector of the line and who have no known grave; he was 22 years old.
