BORN HULL 1885. SON OF JOHN SHUTWELL HOLMES (1855-1941) & EMILY FORD (1859-1941), OF 23, ARTHUR STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS &WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND 11 , QUEENSGATE STREET, BOULEVARD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

HE WAS UNMARRIED. WORKED AS A COAL MERCHANT. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6.5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCH CHEST, 122 LBS WEIGHT

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 2ND MARCH 1916. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE, ON 1ST MARCH 1917. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 13/03/1917. SERVED WITH THE 4TH NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 28/09/1918, AGED 33.

BURIED AT ZANTVOORDE BRITISH CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “SAVED BY GRACE ABSENT FROM THE BODY PRESENT WITH THE LORD”.
