BORN HULL 1877. SON OF HENRY HOPWOOD (1848-1910) AND ELIZABETH WOOLLASS (1843-1883). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER.
HE LEFT HULL TO LIVE IN PONTEFRACT, IN 1906. HE ENLISTED IN THE TERRITORIALS IN 1907. MARRIED, MARY ELLEN MOSELY (1867-1939), AT ST GILES, PONTERFACT, ON 19/12/1908. THEY LIVED IN PONTEFRACT AND THEN AT, 8 HOPWOOD TERRACE, BRIGHT STREET, HULL. HE WORKED AS A BRICKLAYER IN NEWINGTON. HIS SISTER LIVED AT 4 DIVISION ROAD, HULL. HE WAS WELL KNOWN AND POPULAR IN HULL.
HE ENLISTED PONTEFRACT. SERVED AS A SERGEANT, IN THE KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE WAS WOUNDED BY A HAND GRENADE HOLDING AN ADVANCED POSITION, ON 27/07/1915. HE DIED OF WOUNDS WITHIN HALF AN HOUR, 25 YARDS FROM THE GERMAN LINE. AGED 38. BURIED AT TALANA FARM CEMETERY, BELGIUM.
HE WORKED AS A HULL SHIP YARD LABOURER (1911 CENSUS) AND AS A BRICKLAYER FOR MR WALTERS AT NEWINGTON, HULL. HIS SISTER LIVED AT 5 DIVISION ROAD, HULL.
THERE IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIM, PRINTED IN THE HULL TIMES 14/08/1915. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH AUGUST 1915. *
