Howes, Augustus

BORN OLDHAM, LANCS, 1890. ELDEST SON OF WILLIAM HENRY HOWES (HARRY) AND ANNIE GRACE ABBOTT, OF 3, RIBBLE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL AND 15, ST GEORGES ROAD, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS A RETAIL MANAGER OF A DRAPERY. ONE OF TEN CHILDREN. PRIOR TO WAR AUGUSTUS WORKED FOR SEVEN YEARS AS AN AGENT WITH SCOTTISH LEGAL LIFE INSURANCE, IN HULL AND THE ROYAL MAIL, STEAM PACKET COMPANY, IN BUENOS AYRES, ARGENTINA. HE RETURNED TO HULL TO ENLIST IN APRIL 1915. HE JOINED THE RE’S AS A MOTOR CYCLE, DISPATCH RIDER. HE HAD BEEN IN FRANCE FOR SIX WEEKS, WHEN HIS MOTOR BIKE WAS BLOWN TO BITS BY A SHELL. HE DIED AT LOOS, ON 28/09/1915, AGED 25.

HE WAS MUCH RESPECTED BY NUMEROUS FRIENDS. HIS BROTHERS FRANK & ROBERT HOWES LIVED AT 15 ST. GEORGES ROAD, HULL.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED AND PHOTOGRAPH PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH OCTOBER 1915 AND IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 9TH OCTOBER 1915.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS ELDEST BROTHER, JOSEPH WILLIAM HOWES, DIED IN CANADA IN 1918. ANOTHER BROTHER, PTE, HAROLD HOWES, 724552, 24TH LONDON REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION IN EGYPT ON 31/10/1917, AGED 30.
