At the time of the 1911 Census, Robert was employed as a labourer in the Lead Works. He married Elizabeth Bibby in October 1913 and the couple moved into 9 Bright Terrace, Bright Street in the city. Robert took on a new job as a Cellar Man and didn’t sign up immediately at the onset of war. He finally enlisted in November 1915 as Conscription loomed and this may have played a part in his decision. He was called up in May 1916 and joined the Pals in France. Robert Gascoigne Hutton was killed in action on 5th November 1917 in the trenches opposite Arleux as winter set in. He was buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery. He was 23 years old.
