BORN MADRAS, INDIA 1898. SON OF CSM, LOUIS INSTONE, KOYLI, & CONSTANCE INSTONE, OF 16, TORRINGTON STREET, HULL. BOTH FATHER AND SON WERE KILLED IN ACTION AND ARE LISTED IN THE HULL MINSTER GOLDEN BOOK. HE WAS A FORMER NEWLAND AVENUE SCHOOL PUPIL. IN 1911 HE WAS HULL’S JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPION AND ALSO IN THE TEAM WHICH WON THE SCHOOL’S CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN THE 3RD COLDSTREAM GUARDS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 01/05/1915, AGED 17.
HE WAS REPORTED WOUNDED WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH N THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH SEPTEMBER 1914. * A LETTER TO HIS SOLDIER FATHER WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 17/04/1915.
HE IS BURIED AT GUARDS CEMETERY, WINDY CORNER, CUINCHY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE READS, “MEMORY CLINGS WITH MANY A SILENT THOUGHT”
ALSO RECORDED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST MARYS CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
HIS FATHER, LOUIS INSTONE WAS LATE SERGEANT DRUMMER, IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND BECAME QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT, IN THE NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED OF BRONCHITIS AT LINCOLN GENERAL HOSPITAL, ON 23/02/1919, AGED 51. AND IS BURIED AT HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY. PLOT 43.66.
