Farrier, Cyril Stamford Ireland (1892-1916)

Cyril Stamford Ireland was born in Lockington in 1892. He was one of four children of Charles William Ireland (1860-1928) and Emily Stamford (1859-1937), of Lockington. Son of a Postman.

He enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery, serving as a gunner with No 1 Depot and was a Farrier Corporal. Cyril did not serve in France. He sadly died on 5 March 1916 in the Northern General Hospital, in Newcastle, of acute pneumonia as a result of Spanish flu. Cyril was buried at St Mary’s Church, Lockington on 8 March 1916.

His brother, Charles Herbert Ireland, had died on 01/04/1914, aged 16.
