Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ROBERT JACKSON 27339. Born 1878, in Cottingham, the third of four children to George and Sarah Jackson. Robert was a Gardener by trade and husband of Hilda. The couple had three children Doris, George and Edna, and resided at 6 Grange Lane, North Ferriby, Hull. He enlisted in Hessle on 6th December 1916, just four weeks before the dreaded Conscription Bill was passed and this may well have been the deciding factor. As we have seen throughout these posts, after the initial rush of September 1914 the biggest concentration of recruitments comes in December 1915 when men were anxious to enter the Army as Volunteers rather than Conscripts. At 40 he was, by comparison, much older man than many of his comrades and with a young family at home it must have been more of a wrench than for the youngsters out for a bit of adventure. Robert was killed in action on 6th November 1917 in the trenches at Arleux. He is buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery.
