BORN HULL 1899. SON OF JOHNATHAN WILLIAM & CAROLINE ALBERTA JACKSON OF 31 JALLAND STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HE FATHER WAS A CLERK FOR THE CITY ENGINEERS. WILLIAM WORKED FOR MESSRS, SANDERSON AND FERENS, PARLIAMENT STREET, HULL, AS A SOLICITOR’S CLERK.HE WAS DEVOTED TO THE BRUNSWICK WESLEYAN CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 19/03/1917, AGED 17 YEARS AND 9 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 112 LBS WEIGHT, & 32.5 INCH CHEST. TRAINED WITH THE 14TH RESERVE BATTALION, AND WITH THE 2ND/1ST YORKSHIRE DRAGOONS, AT BROCTON CAMP. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 34771, DUKE OF WELLINGTON’S (WEST RIDING) REGIMENT, FROM 06/08/1918. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 30/08/1918, AGED 19. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 25/09/1918. *
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED FATHER. HE LEFT BROTHER ARTHUR ERNEST JACKSON AND SISTERS, ALICE, DORA, KATHLEEN AND CONSTANCE, WHO ALL LIVED AT 31 JALLAND STREET. HE IS FATHER AND ELDEST SISTER, MADE AN APPLICATION TO VISIT HIS GRAVE AFTER THE WAR.
HE IS BURIED AT VIS-EN-ARTOIS BRITISH CEMETERY, HAUCOURT. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT ET MAINTENANT CHEZ LE SEIGNEUR”
