BORN HEDON, HULL, ON 22/08/1883. SON OF JAMES (JIM) JOHNSON & SARAH JANE HOPPER. MOVED TO COLNE, PENDLE, LANCASHIRE, IN 1901. LIKE HIS BROTHER, HARRY, HE WORKED AS A BRICKLAYER AND LEATHER DRESSER, FOR MESSRS, S SMITH AND SONS LIMITED, WATERSIDE, COLNE.

HE ENLISTED AS 19571, KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. TRANSFERRED TO THE 6TH YORK AND LANCS REGIMENT. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/10/1917, AGED 34. COMMEMORATED ATTHE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM.
HE WAS A SINGLE MAN. HIS TWO YOUNGER BROTHERS WERE ALSO KILLED IN THE WAR. HIS MOTHER HAD DIED IN 1906. HE LEFT AN ONLY SISTER, ANNIE ELIZABETH JOHNSON, AT HOME WITH THEIR FATHER.
HIS BROTHER PRIVATE, WILLIAM HENRY JOHNSON, KNOWN AS ‘HARRY’, WORKED AS A BRICKLAYER AND LEATHER DRESSER, FOR MESSRS, S SMITH AND SONS LIMITED, WATERSIDE, COLNE. HE MARRIED ALICE BALDWIN, IN BURNLEY, ON 08/05/1913. HE ENLISTED IN COLNE, IN DECEMBER 1916. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, IN MARCH 1917. TAKEN PRISONER AND DIED IN GERMAN HANDS OF PNEUMONIA, ON 28/07/1918, AGED 29. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND DAUGHTER, MARIE, LIVING AT 45 CHARLES STREET, COLNE. HIS OTHER BROTHER, JAMES ‘JIM’ JOHNSON, WAS KILLED AT ARRAS, WITH THE BORDER REGIMENT, ON 11/08/1918, AGED 31
