BORN HULL 1886. SON OF THE LATE THOMAS JOHNSON AND ANNIE GIBSON, AT 232 ALLIANCE AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). A CLERK.
HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 17/11/1914, AGED 28 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS. HE TRAINED AT BEVERLEY AND RIPON. TRANSFERRED TO THE MACHINE GUN COMPANY, ON 08/04/1916. HE SERVED IN EGYPT, FRANCE AND FLANDERS. WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT HAND ON 13/05/1917. INVALIDED HOME. HE RETURNED TO FRANCE ON 12/11/1917. HE WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH ON 01/03/1918, FOR SLEEPING AT HIS POST WHILE IN THE TRENCHES, AT BULLECORT. THE SENTENCE WAS FIVE YEARS OF PENAL SERVITUDE. HIS DEFENCE MAINTAINED THAT AS A FORMER CLERK, HE WAS SOBER, RELIABLE AND INTELLIGENT. THE SENTENCE WAS COMMUTED TO BE RE-CONSIDERED ON 10/06/1918. DURING THIS TIME, GEORGE WAS RETURNED TO DUTY ON 11/03/1918. REPORTED MISSING, WOUNDED AND THEN KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/04/1918, AGED 32. HE HAD SERVED FOR 3 YEARS AND 144 DAYS. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ANNIE. HE LEFT BROTHERS, ROBERT EDWARD JOHN AND CHARLES SIDNEY JOHNSON AND THREE SISTERS, HELENA, ALICE AND AMELIA.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
