Jones, Alfred

Alfred Jones, 8th KOYLI.

Born Hull, 29 Dec 1884. Son of Thomas Jones (1855-1944) and Teresa Swinney (1858-1918), of 5 Fern Villas Fern St Hull. He had four brothers and four sisters.

He married in Hull, on 26 Jun 1909. Husband of Rhoda Askam (1888- 1932), at 3 Junction Place Waterhouse Lane, Hull (1911 Census) and 15, Southcoates Terrace, Buckingham Street, Hull (War Pension address). He was a Leather Carrier & Leather Dresser For Machine Belting. He had five sons, Thomas, Sam, Arthur, George and Ernest and daughter Rhoda who died at birth in 1916.

He served in the 8th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry from 1914-1918. Wounded by gunshot to the hand. Discharged 13/5/1919. He was at Passchendael (Belgium), and was blown out of the trench by a 5tn mortar shell. He was uninjured physically, but suffered “shell shock” for the rest of his life. He died on 20/10/1923, aged 38.

Newspaper reports that he shot himself in the house after a long period of “neurasthenia” (Shell- shock, or PTSD) from his time in WW1. Was a bit of a shock for the family…..as his wife clearly loved him from Obituary notes.
