BORN SUNDERLAND 30/09/1897. SON WILLIAM (1870-1926) & FRANCIS EMMA KIRKUP (1861-1951), OF 3 SYDENHAM VILLAS, STANLEY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A GENERAL POST OFFICE WORKER. HE HAD THREE YOUNGER SIBLINGS, FLORENCE MARGARET, EDITH ANNIE AND AUSTIN KIRKUP.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/06/1918, AGED 20. BURIED AT THE SOMME, FRANCE (Cayeux-en-Santerre, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France).

HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH AUGUST 1919. *

HE IS BURIED AT CAYEUX MILITARY CEMETERY, SOMME, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “NOT MY WILL BUT THINE BE DONE”
