
Born West Newton, Yorkshire, 1891. Son of Edward and Betsy Ann Knapton, of Withernwick and Beverley.
He was policeman in the East riding Constabulary and is commemorated on their WW1 Memorial Plaque at St Mary’s Church, Hengate, Beverley.
He served as Private S/8200, 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany’s). Killed at the Battle of Loos, on 25/09/1915, aged 24.
Buried in DUD CORNER CEMETERY, LOOS, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VI. Row G. Grave 11.
He left £153 in his will and his army effects to his mother, Betsy Ann Knapton.
His brother, Sergeant, Thomas Knapton, RGA, aged 26, who had served eleven years in the army, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, in 1918. Another brother, served in the navy. HDM 18/07/1918.
