BORN HULL 1896. ONLY SON OF GEORGE WILLIAM LACEY (1872-1948) & FRANCIS ELLEN LACEY (1870-1951), 14 STIRLING STREET, ANLABY ROAD. (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A RAILWAY INSPECTOR. HE HAD YOUNGER SISTERS, LAURA AND GLADYS. EMPLOYED AS A SHIPPING CLERK. HE ENLISTED IN THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ALSO KNOWN AS THE 1ST HULL PALS, THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH AND THEN 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 18/10/1918, AGED 22. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER, FRANCES.
HIS NAME WAS LISTED ON THE WILSON LINE CRICKET & ATHLETIC CLUB’S ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 25TH MAY 1918.
HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM, AT ERQUELINNES COMMUNAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “IT IS SWEET TO KNOW WE WILL MEET AGAIN”
