BORN HULL 1899. SON OF JOHN LANE (1864-1917) & SOPHIA WILSON (1868-1944), OF 3 MORRELL’S BUILDINGS, VILLA PLACE, HULL, WHO LOST 3 SONS DURING THE WAR. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. SON OF A HORSE KEEPER. BEFORE THE WAR, HE WORKED AS AS ERRAND BOY (1911 CENSUS) .

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 4341, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH BORDER REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 29/04/1918, AGED 19.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER SOPHIA. HIS TWO BROTHERS WERE ALSO KILLED.IN THE WAR. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY MEMORIAL, IN HULL’S HOLY TRINITY CHURCH.

ALL THREE BROTHERS, JAMES, HAROLD AND NORMAN LANE ARE ALL RECORDED ON ST THOMAS CHURCH MEMORIAL, CAMPBELL STREET, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN WW2.
